Today's Out and About - Spokane's Trans Day of Visibility

Today is 2026’s Transgender Day of Visibility! I am wondering if, today, Idaho Governor Brad Little will sign the law banning people from using the restroom which corresponds to their gender. Maybe!

I will be asking TDOV organizers Sloan Poe and Maggie McGuire what will be on tap for TDOV celebrations this evening at Nyne Bar. I am speaking at the event, but that shouldn’t keep you from attending! I believe Spokane Pride's Matt Danielson will also be on-board today. Yay!

We transgender people were the canaries in the coal mine to detect the insidious, and now overt, evil of the Trump Administration. As the MAGA methane keeps killing off trans and non-trans people in our own country and around the world, hear how some of us “transnaries” have been wearing little SCBAs for the last few years.

Today’s show will be interesting for trans people and essential for allies and all decent and honorable people who want to stand up against this dishonorable and demonic regime.

I will play a little music too.

As always, thank you to my underwriters - Boots Bakery and Eastern Washington University.

Tune into Out and About every Tuesday at 4 pm on KYRS at 88.1 and 92.3 fm. Also streaming at KYRS.org. Thanks for listening! Maeve

Yesterday's Out and About - The No Kings Rally is on Saturday - with Sami Perry

Yesterday on Out and About, I had Sami Perry, from Spokane Indivisible, on the show to talk about the upcoming No Kings Protest (March 28, 1-4:30 pm, BA Clark Park, corner of Garland and Division).

There were 13,000 people here in Spokane that attended last October's No Kings Protest. Since then, we’ve had more destruction of our democracy, kidnapping heads of state, more turning our backs on our allies and embracing dictatorship, killing people without due process, evidence of Trump being a pedophile and covering it up, along with the dementia-stream of consciousness out of his lips every day, oh yeah, and an illegal and unnecessary war that has killed innocent people and our troops. I am guess there will be more than 13,000 at this next one. If you missed the show, here’s a link  https://archive.kyrs.org/mp3/kyrs_260324_160000b.mp3

Today's Out and About - Sami Perry and this Saturday's (March 28) No Kings protest....

This Saturday is the No Kings protest at BA Clark Park - 1 pm to 4:30 pm. Today, I will be talking to Spokane Indivisible organizer (and my buddy) Sami Perry. What can we expect? Have there been any big changes since October - the last No Kings rally? How can you participate? As our country has tipped into full-blown Fascism and war, have the rules of engagement changed?

As always, thank you to my underwriters - Boots Bakery and Eastern Washington University.

Yesterday's Out and About - Eclectic Irish Music Knotted "Celtically" with the History of Irish Social Justice...

Yesterday on Out and About, I played some Irish music that spanned the decades, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. In between songs, I talked about the social messages behind the music, some of the history of Irish social movements and how those movements came to America, largely in the IWW and in a religion that encouraged the social justice called for in the Gospels (the Gospels contain the teachings of Jesus - the guy that today’s ignoramus “Christian” “Nationalists” like to ignore). Somebody was calling in to the show and I tried answering the phone but couldn’t get it to pick up. With my hearing loss, I probably would have set “WHAT!?!?!” a lot, had I been able to answer, and maybe the caller should be grateful that I couldn’t pick up.  If you missed the show, here’s a link -  https://archive.kyrs.org/mp3/kyrs_260317_160000b.mp3

Today on Out and About - St Patrick's Day and Songs of Irish Social Movements

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Today on Out and About, I will be playing music of Irish resistance and social solidarity. These are songs that come from Ireland or were influenced by the Irish to rouse your working soul and provide some joy and inspiration for the hard days to come. I will be providing a little context for the music, as well.

Please tune in today between 4 and 6 pm. That’s when I will be on the air. You can listen on your radio at 88.1 or 92.3 fm. You can also livestream at kyrs.org.

Yesterday's Out and About - We raised $712!

Yesterday,  we raised $712 for KYRS! I was on the air for two hours, playing music and talking until I was quite hoarse! Thank you very much to all who donated. I feel like KYRS is such an important tool for keeping the fading ember of democracy alive. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

If you missed yesterday’s Out and About,  here’s a link to the radio station’s archived recording -  https://archive.kyrs.org/mp3/kyrs_260310_160000b.mp3

And as always, I would like to thank my underwriters - Boots Bakery, Eastern Washington University and Breathing Room.

Today, please call!

Today, I am going to do something that is very hard for me - ask for money. Not for me but for our community radio station - KYRS. I have $200 that I will use to match your donations until the $200 runs out. $3.00 a month buys you a membership to the station. You’ll get a cool bumpersticker. If you want to give more, the membership gifts increase. If you are already a member, please think about making a one-time gift in addition to your membership.
By helping KYRS stay on the air, you will be preserving a lifeline for our democracy. KYRS is a pro-democracy radio station, so even when they shut the Internet down, you will be able to hear what is really happening in our world. We receive no government funding. Accordingly, we can bring you truthful news, without worrying about losing funding from the regime. That’s why we can broadcast national shows (which we have to pay for) like Thom Hartmann and Democracy Now. You can also tune into unfiltered local news from Free Range and KYRS’s Spokane Local News. Those of us who have shows are volunteers. We don’t get paid. We do it because we want to serve you.
The first Americans that the Trump Administration declared war on were transgender people. My show Out and About gives voice to LGBT folks, as well as straight allies - artists, small business owners, activists, healthcare workers, educators and all those who work to make our region a better place for all. My show provides information on where anti-fascism protests are occurring in our community. KYRS reports live from all pro-democracy events - including the No Kings Protests, the Pride Parade and Festival and many other community celebrations.
Please tune in today between 4 and 6 pm. That’s when I will be on the air. You can listen on your radio at 88.1 or 92.3 fm. You can also livestream at kyrs.org . I will be playing a little music and talking with my friend Robert. Robert is the host of Creative Mindset. The number is (509)747-3807. We have one person who volunteered to answer the phones, so if it’s busy, or keeps ringing, please call back. Thanks, Maeve
