Today on Out and About, I will be talking with my friend Sami Perry from Spokane Indivisible
With the takeover of our nation by bona fide Fascists, Spokane has had some of the biggest protests we've ever seen. From illegal kidnapping of residents, to the national attack on LGBTQ folks, to the destruction of our institutions and the elimination of a person’s right to bodily autonomy, the attacks have been relentless. Washington citizens have stood up for the traditional values of honor, freedom and liberty. And leading the charge on organizing citizens to resist the authoritarian takeover has been Spokane Indivisible.
What are some next steps? What can we do to stay in the fight? How do we keep from getting absorbed into the rottenness that the Trump cultists continually spew? I have so many questions for Sami!

Yesterday's Out and About - Talking with Chris Jensen about Theater on the Verge's production of Torch Song
I really enjoyed my conversation with Chris Jensen. Chris is the producer of Theater on the Verge's production of Torch Song. You only have this weekend left to see this show. Torch Song has received such rave reviews.
The story behind the story of Torch Song is beautiful and so is the story of why Chris and director Troy Nickerson wanted to do stage this play (a first for our region). I love to hear how a team of creatives come together to make something beautiful and that comes through in this interview.

A little walk around Green Lake
Walking around Green Lake in Seattle there were constant reminders that our nation is still a place where most people are decent, kind and honorable. This is what I learned as a kid in CCD.
There definitely is a dark force which wants us to be afraid, to be in hiding, to withdraw, or to respond to the destroyers with our own acts of destruction instead of responding with creative love. But, that's what we are called to do.When I see people showing signs that they are doing that, it makes me happy!

ICE! Episode One - No. Your Other Right Hand...
I've been working on this for the last week. I have a whole hopper full of episodes ready to write.
When I was a kid, I loved CHIPs and SWAT. These were the "good guys," and there was no ambiguity in my young heart as to what they were and how they fit in to what America was. I also really enjoyed Hogan's Heroes. I think ICE is kind of a mashup of the two.
What happens when a respected law enforcement branch succumbs to authoritarianism? What happens when those who are supposed to enforce our laws violate our laws? What happens when they become the silly NAZIs on Hogan's Heroes? I tell you what happens. ICE!
Maybe, this would be good live theater?

Yesterday's Out and About
Yesterday, I talked with Rusty Nelson. Rusty has organized events to help us mark the 80th year since the United States bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We talked about the bombings, their legacy and how they juxtapose against what we are currently experiencing here at home. We also discussed how people could join Veterans For Peace and the events that they are sponsoring. If you missed the show, here is a link to take a listen. https://archive.kyrs.org/mp3/kyrs_250722_160000b.mp3

Tomorrow on Out and About. The Inland Classical Theatre Radio Players will be in the studio, twelve of them, jammed into the studio to perform a 30-minute version of The Tempest. Yours truly will be running the sound effects board, the sound board, doing the narration, playing the spots and hosting. Yikes! This is going to be madcap. Yesterday on Out and About - Jenny Seibert
Yesterday I had my pal, and sister trans peep, Jenny Seibert on to talk about the present political situation. I had read a news article about a trans woman who got involved with the drag community in Texas. I had taken a somewhat negative spin on the article, whereas Jenny had a much more positive outlook on it. Thank you Jenny for helping me see this in a better light!

My mom died last Tuesday...
So, no guest for today's show. I will play some music and hang out, but probably won't have a whole lot to say. My mom was my first CCD teacher (basically Catholic Sunday School). I remember the textbook she used was very beautiful, with poignant black and white photos and prose that really evoked a Jesus that loved all people and wanted us to do the same. I believe the curriculum she taught really helped form who I am today. My mom continued throughout her life to model the words she taught me as a kid. She remained politically aware - active and appalled by what is going on in our nation - right until the very end.
