Christmas is on its way and so I have been busy painting what will be this year’s Christmas card.
I have been trying to think of ways to find more solidarity with people being persecuted right now. I know, as a trans person, that the crosshairs of the regime are firmly upon me, but I live a privileged life, and feel very fortunate to live in the state I do and to have people around me who love me. I have come up with a couple of ideas for solidarity which I may share later.
We are living in a time where the lines of justice have never been more clearly drawn. Areas that used to be gray have been infused with contrast. This provides a lot of clarity. There are so many of us who now try to stand together in the light- racial minorities, people of all true faiths, humanists, immigrants, LGBTQ folks, union members, farmers, teachers, doctors, nurses, military members, the working poor, those who work in public safety - all united by a sense of common decency, honor and love. All driven by a thirst for truth and justice.
I thought of a lot of names for this painting and I am going to call it the most unwieldy name on the list - “Democracy Mt. 25 Angel.” Jesus tells us how nations will be judged in Mt. 25. You often hear from people who call themselves “Christians,” that it is not up to government to do the things Jesus asks nations to do, but that it is the individuals’ responsibility. Of course, this is a contradiction to what the Gospel says, and it is important to note that, at least for this moment, we live in a republic - a democracy, and that what and who you vote for does say what your values are and who you are truly following. Your vote is the nation you want to see.
If you would like a nice, small print of this painting, email me at maevegallery@gmail.com and leave me your postal address, or you can message me and provide the same info (email and postal address). I am not charging anything.
