Last night someone tried to steal this fine piece of holiday workmanship. Luckilly, the homeowner is used to this sort of thing.
He was awakened at 11 pm by such a clatter, he sprung from the bed to see what was the matter. And what to his wondering eyes did he see, but the snowman at the end of a long tether - as safe as can be.
Knowing next time they'll be wise to his trick, he needed a new trap - one with more kick
"What's the next phase?" aloud wondered he. "Hey, what about some pungi sticks - just like the VC?"

scaffold car
This VW Rabbit-Scaffold has not moved in the 5 years that I have seen it. This house is a beautiful old place, but it's rotting away. I think the scaffold car may be holding the whole thing up.

Poles of Mystery!
If you scour older neighborhoods around Spokane, you might see a light pole, or power pole like this - with a large red stripe bounded by two smaller white stripes. The paint is fading. Newer poles don't have these stripes.
What does it mean?
In the early 60s, was it used to mark an evacuation route for when the nukes started to fly?
In the 80s, was it to mark the route for the United Nations tanks to come down from Canada and make us all speak English instead of 'Merican?
Today, does it have some Al Queda meaning?
Or was someone just bored?
What do you think?

shrub fortress
So, you're wealthy and scared. You've created a 10 foot tall shrub fortress around your front yard. But now it's election time and you face a conundrum. How do you publicly support the candidate who supports you and your i$$ues with a campaign sign in your front yard? It's easy with a little help from a portable basketball set-up. Can you guess which party is being supported here?

Spokane Area Faithful Dwindling
I knew that there are less and less people going to church, but I didn't know that even the Jack-O-Lantern Day Saints are seeing their numbers decrease. Perhaps the pews are empty because the sacrifice has just been made.
Before I go too far down this road, let me squash any rumors by saying this is Penelope the Pumpkin. She is up at Hidden Acres in Green Bluff (look for the signs, it's easy to find). Kids can talk to Penelope and she'll talk back! I don't know why there's a fence. I bet there's a good story about that, huh?

VULTURE BOY AND THE GEO!
Received a really nice e-mail from the fellow who was trawling for a housekeeper with a Geo (a few posts back). He says he secured a very nice student to clean his house in exchange for laundry rights and Geo capabilities. As a Geo driver myself, I would say that's a good trade for both parties. Another cool thing about Vulture Boy is that he is, among other things, the dreaded Doomsday Vulture! For nonspokanites (NSPKNs) - every year, we have a huge (the largest, I believe) timed footrace called Bloomsday. It's about 7 and a half miles long. Towards the end, there is a big ass, half mile hill (Pettet Drive). And perched above this hill is the Doomsday Vulture, aka Vulture Boy. He is the recipient of tens of thousands of high-fives as the 50,000 or so folks reach the top of the hill. Thanks Vulture Boy for the good words and the apt reminder of our own mortality.

Sneedle! Lame-O Seattle Space Needle Mascot
All right, this website is about Spokane. But come on. Seattle, you've got the SPACE NEEDLE. It's an icon, an emblem. It's not like people are going to meet "Sneedle" and say, "Hey, I wonder what this is all about, this so-called 'Space' Needle." Or, "This Sneedle chap is so awesome, I have to see the real thing right now!" What ad agency is responsible for this floparoo? And really what's with Sneedle's appendage atop his head? Is it how Sneedles reproduce? Is he just happy? Maybe he should be a mascot for a used needle exchange program.
old tyvek place
This is a landmark. A few years back, the Tyvek had all blown off/disintegrated. When you said, "turn right at the Old Tyvek Place," newcomers would not know what you were talking about. Thanks to community pride, vision and a staple gun, this useful landmark has been restored. May the Tyvek ever flutter in the crisp morning breeze!

Safeguarding our (Jeep) Liberty
This is in the parking lot of a social services govt outlet in Spokane. We've never seen anything like it here. Is this a common parking situation in bigger cities? I'm anxious to see how this plays out in the winter time.

Welcome to Spokane. Unbelievers beware of oral deathrays.
You can see this mural from Interstate 90 right before you exit. It may cause you to think twice about exiting. Don't worry, Yahweh's "LASER" mouth has been de-activated for repairs. And because of the city's budget crisis, there is talk of replacing it with a speaker connected to a phonograph. We are looking for corporate sponsorship (hint, hint... RADIOSHACK). We've got the UP WITH PEOPLE albums. Let's get going Spokane!
Use of a GEO Metro for housekeeping
Seen on the corner of Spokane Falls Blvd and Stevens this morning. I wonder how many hits this guy has had.
