Yesterday's Out and About - Sami Perry, No Kings Rally, VOTE EARLY

Yesterday on Out and About, I had Sami Perry on from We Have The Power. We Have The Power is one of the organizations that is putting together the No Kings rally on October 17. The theme of this rally is "Vote Early." Ballots will have dropped a couple days before. There are thousands of ballots in Spokane County that did not get counted last election because they were postmarked too late. Sami says to plan on having your ballot in the mailbox or election dropbox before October 22. With Trump’s fascist influence on the Post Office, I will be dropping off mine at a dropbox and then making sure it gets counted by checking in here at VoteWA.

As far as the No Kings rally, they are trying something a little different this time. The rally will start at 1 pm and continue until 5 pm, same as always. The different thing is that there are three organized marches to the rally site at BA Clark Park - one from Franklin Park. One from Corbin park and another from the Garland Theater. Of course those will start earlier than 1 pm because, you know, walking.

You can find more information on the marches here. You can find out more information about We Have The Power here. If you missed yesterday’s show, you can check it out here.

As always, thank you to my underwriter - Eastern Washington University.

Today on Out and About - The next No Kings Rally and the upcoming election, with Sami Perry

The next No Kings protest is coming up fast. This one is going to center on the upcoming election. I know people might get sick of hearing this, but this next election may be the most important election in our nation’s history.

What do rising gas prices, rising grocery prices, the growing homeless population, the defunding of your healthcare, the illegal and immoral wars started by our government, the losing of all of our allies while we cozy up to dictatorships, the assault on our Constitution, the attacks on the free press, the misuse  of our military, the attack on immigrants, the attack on people of color, the attack on LGBTQ people, the rewriting of history, the destruction of institutions, the destruction of research and science, the increasing wildfires, the exploding nation deficit,  the selling of your future and your children’s future to benefit the Epstein class, the astronomical graft that President Trump has taken (to the tune of billions) all at a cost to you… What do all of these thing have in common? All of these spring from illegal, fascist moves by Trump and his cult, aided and abetted by dishonorable and immoral Republican jurists, senators and representatives, including our own Michael  Baumgartner.

Whether we rescue our nation (and your future) is up to you and your vote. Republican cult members know that if they lose control, justice is coming - for all of them. They will do anything and everything to make sure that it is extremely hard for people to vote, and to make sure people’s votes are not counted. When we win, they will do everything in their power to stop Democrats from occupying the office they have legally won. Think January 6 on steroids.

These Republican politicians are crooked and have no honor. They will fight tooth and nail to keep justice from occurring. Whatever happens, this election will be one for the history books. And when your grandkids ask what you did, how you voted this November, you will either be proud to tell them what you did to save our nation or you will be ashamed to say you did nothing. Unless, you are a MAGA person. Because, in order to feel shame, you must embrace some sort of morality. If you have any morality, you would have removed yourself from this cult years ago.

Today, on Out and About, I will be talking with Sami Perry from Spokane Indivisible about the next No Kings Rally and why voting is crucial this election.

Yesterday's Out and About - September Snow Day

Yesterday on
Out and About, I talked with Trevor Finchamp about Snow In September. This is an event to celebrate fifty years of cross country ski trails on Mount Spokane. It has a lot of great activities and prizes and it’s free. Best of all it takes place at Brick West brewery. The fun begins at 5 pm and continues to 8 pm this Friday, September 18th.

Unfortunately, Trevor was feeling pretty stressed because he’s the organizer of the event, so he had to leave early. I was going to play some music, but somebody called in to the station, a guy named “Pizza.” He had some amazing things to say about cross country skiing and lichen. After he hung up, I started playing some music but was interrupted by another phone call. And this guy thought that we weren’t taking things seriously enough. Luckily, the show ended almost immediately thereafter.

If you missed this broadcast of
Out and About, you can listen to the archived edition here.

Today on Out and About - SEPTEMBER SNOW DAY!

Today on Out and About, I will be talking about September Snow Day with Trevor Finchamp. September Snow Day is a celebration of fifty years of cross-country skiing on Mount Spokane. The event takes place at Brick West Brewing on September 18, from 5 to 8 pm. It’s family-friendly with some very cool activities and giveaways.

Unfortunately, Trevor usually attracts some strange phone calls into the studio. Sometimes, shadowy figures even follow him up to the  booth. And, of course, we want to hear what they have to say because - LIVE RADIO!!!

If you are looking forward to winter fun, you won’t want to miss today’s show.

Yesterday's Out and About - Lily Booth and the South Perry Street Fair...

Yesterday on Out and About, I talked with Lily Booth. Lily is the president of South Perry Together. This group is putting on the Perry Street Fair - September 26. It sounds like a great event and I will be walking over there to spend the day, for sure. Lots of food, music and fun. What I am really excited about is a walking history tour of the neighborhood that they are unveiling at the event. I am a total nerd about these kind of things and poor Lily had to listen to me free associate and scat my way through a psychotropic local history screed. But, don’t let that deter you from listening to this show if you missed the live broadcast. Here’s a link.

How would you like a free t-shirt and some free drink coupons for the event (3 beer gardens)? All you have to do is volunteer to help out for a couple of hours. Here is where you can sign up.

Today's Out and About - The South Perry Street Fair!

Today on Out and About, I have Lily Booth on the air to talk with me about the South Perry Street Fair. Lily is the president of South Perry Together. The fair takes place on September 26 and is jam-packed with entertainment, activities and fun. South Perry is truly a jewel of a neighborhood. How did it get that way? How is it that it just keeps getting better? Looking forward to talking with Lily!

Testerday's Out and About - Mad Underground at Stage Left Theater - September 11 - 27!

Yesterday on Out and About, I talked with Director Preston Loomer and Playwright Sandra Hosking from the Stage Left Theater production of Mad Underground. These two are both multipotentialites. If you’re a longtime listener of the show, you will know how much I like to  talk to artists who don't specialize in one field but work in different arenas - artists who write, act, paint, sculpt, etc., in order to get their message out. Accordingly, I not only had a lot of questions about Mad Underground, but also about Sandra's and Preston’s creative practices.

Mad Underground
sounds like a great show and you can get tickets here. If you missed this episode of Out and About, here’s a link to the archived show.

Today's Out and About - Director Preston Loomer and Playwright Sandra Hosking - Stage Left Theater's production of Mad Underground

It has been so long since I have talked to anyone from Stage Left Theater! So, I am really looking forward to talking with folks from Stage Left’s newest production which opens on September 11. The show is called Mad Underground. I will have both the playwright Sandra Hosking and the director Preston Loomer on board this afternoon to talk about this show. Mad Underground sounds like a play that will hit that sweet spot for me - a little spooky, very funny and thought-provoking. These are the type of shows, in my opinion, that Stage Left Theater does best! And as an added bonus, this show will benefit Spokane’s Odyssey Youth Movement - a charity which helps out young LGBTQ folks in our region.

Yesterday's Out and About - Special Guest - Sharo - and the KYRS GALA...

Yesterday on Out and About, I talked with KYRS board member Sharo. Sharo is a familiar voice for fans of his show - The Persian Hour. Although The Persian Hour is no more, Sharo is still very connected to the station with his work. We talked about the upcoming KYRS Gala and how you can get tickets here. We also talked about why KYRS is a much needed voice in our community and about the illegal, immoral and catastrophic war that Fascist, conman, adjudicated rapist and felon Trump has waged upon Iran, our nation and our servicemen and women. If you missed the show - have a listen here.

Today's Out and About - The KYRS Gala!

KYRS receives no federal funding. There is only one (slightly) paid person for the entire station. All of us who have shows, or help out in some other way, are volunteers. We do this because we want to provide Spokane with an alternative voice. You can hear this in the music we play, the politics we highlight and the people we interview on air. The station is completely dependent on your donations - either through membership or through underwriters. Money is getting tighter, not just for us at the station, but for everyone in our community.

It is not surprising that a lone voice which tries to bring you the truth about how we got here, as a nation, and how we can go forward, as a community, to fix what they have broken is always in danger of being silenced. For me, there is no greater need in Eastern Washington and North Idaho than this voice. Many listeners turn to our national progressive programming, as well as our local voices, whenever there is a new attack on the Inland Northwest. These attacks may be overtly political or come in the form of something so heart-breaking as the fires that destroyed homes and dislocated thousands in our city.

Everywhere we look, we see need. KYRS is your community radio staton. We need you. But, unlike a lot of other organizations that also deeply need your help, we will give you something in return, whether you help us or not. All you have to do is turn on your radio, or use your phone or computer. This is why we are here. We want to always be here for you.

We are putting on a gala on September 25. It starts at 6 pm with dinner starting at 7. There will be entertainment and donated auction items. You can get your tickets here.

On today’s Out and About, I will be talking with Sharo from The Persian Hour (broadcasts on Saturdays at noon). Sharo is one of the event organizers. Tune in and we will be giving you more details about the station and the event.

Yesterday's Out and About - Garland Pride this Saturday!

Yesterday on Out and About, I talked with my pal Matt Danielson. Matt is the Executive Director of Spokane Pride, and he has been bringing Pride Festivals to places all across the region, right here in the USA and Canada. He has also helped create a lot of neighborhood Pride Festivals in Spokane. When I have Matt on the show, it runs on autopilot. And so it was yesterday when we talked about this Saturday’s Garland Pride Festival. Although, we had to overcome a shutdown of water at the studio and locks not working! If you missed the show, here's a link to have a listen.

Today's Out and About - Garland Pride!

Spokane’s big Pride Festival was a couple of months ago and drew tens of thousands of people to Downtown Spokane and Riverfront Park. It was such a great time and maybe, like me, you’re missing that connection with so many kind and wonderful people. Good news! Garland Pride is this Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, featuring free admission, local vendors, drag performances, live music, and family fun for all.

Today on Out and About, I will be talking with my friend and friend of the show, Matt Danielson. Matt is the Executive Director of Spokane Pride and he will give us all the details of this Saturday’s festivities and more.
