Yesterday on Out and About, I talked with KYRS board member Sharo. Sharo is a familiar voice for fans of his show - The Persian Hour. Although The Persian Hour is no more, Sharo is still very connected to the station with his work. We talked about the upcoming KYRS Gala and how you can get tickets here. We also talked about why KYRS is a much needed voice in our community and about the illegal, immoral and catastrophic war that Fascist, conman, adjudicated rapist and felon Trump has waged upon Iran, our nation and our servicemen and women. Today's Out and About - The KYRS Gala!

 

KYRS receives no federal funding. There is only one (slightly) paid person for the entire station. All of us who have shows, or help out in some other way, are volunteers. We do this because we want to provide Spokane with an alternative voice. You can hear this in the music we play, the politics we highlight and the people we interview on air. The station is completely dependent on your donations - either through membership or through underwriters. Money is getting tighter, not just for us at the station, but for everyone in our community.

It is not surprising that a lone voice which tries to bring you the truth about how we got here, as a nation, and how we can go forward, as a community, to fix what they have broken is always in danger of being silenced. For me, there is no greater need in Eastern Washington and North Idaho than this voice. Many listeners turn to our national progressive programming, as well as our local voices, whenever there is a new attack on the Inland Northwest. These attacks may be overtly political or come in the form of something so heart-breaking as the fires that destroyed homes and dislocated thousands in our city.

Everywhere we look, we see need. KYRS is your community radio staton. We need you. But, unlike a lot of other organizations that also deeply need your help, we will give you something in return, whether you help us or not. All you have to do is turn on your radio, or use your phone or computer. This is why we are here. We want to always be here for you.

We are putting on a gala on September 25. It starts at 6 pm with dinner starting at 7. There will be entertainment and donated auction items. You can get your tickets here.

Yesterday's Out and About - Garland Pride this Saturday!

 

Yesterday on Out and About, I talked with my pal Matt Danielson. Matt is the Executive Director of Spokane Pride, and he has been bringing Pride Festivals to places all across the region, right here in the USA and Canada. He has also helped create a lot of neighborhood Pride Festivals in Spokane. When I have Matt on the show, it runs on autopilot. And so it was yesterday when we talked about this Saturday’s Garland Pride Festival. Although, we had to overcome a shutdown of water at the studio and locks not working! Today's Out and About - Garland Pride!

 

Spokane’s big Pride Festival was a couple of months ago and drew tens of thousands of people to Downtown Spokane and Riverfront Park. It was such a great time and maybe, like me, you’re missing that connection with so many kind and wonderful people. Good news! Garland Pride is this Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, featuring free admission, local vendors, drag performances, live music, and family fun for all.

Today on Out and About, I will be talking with my friend and friend of the show, Matt Danielson. Matt is the Executive Director of Spokane Pride and he will give us all the details of this Saturday’s festivities and more.

Today on Out and About - TDS! You may have it!!!!

Like many of you, when I have pointed out the illegalities, the immorality, the lunacy, the failures and corruptness of Donald Trump to his cult members, I have been accused of having TDS - “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” All the documented lawlessness of this crime organization pretending to be a government are things that I would object to, no matter if it was a Republican or a Democratic administration committing these crimes. MAGA cult members would be joining me in my objections, if these crimes were not being committed by their cult leader. Because, in their derangement,  they give Trump and his henchmen/women, a special carve out. To sell one’s credibility, one’s future and one’s morality to a conman of the lowest IQ is a pretty sad thing to witness.

Their accusations did get me thinking - what if I do have TDS? I think I might  be infected, but it is a different kind of TDS. This TDS may be very contagious for those of us who still have any morality, any rationality, and humanity left in us. So, maybe you have contracted it, as well.

Today on Out and About, I have allowed myself the luxury of scheduling no guest so I can have you, the listener, to myself to discuss this concept. Fear not. I will be bolstering my anti-fascist monologue with some music for the revolution.

This revolution may not be televised, but, thanks to the people’s radio station - KYRS -  it may be “radiovised.”

Yesterday's Out and About - Artist Jennifer Seo - Bab Geuleus: 1. Rice Bowl 2. Means of Living...

Yesterday on Out and About, I had artist Jennifer Seo on to talk about the gallery opening of the newest showing of her work - "Bab Geuleus: 1. Rice Bowl 2. Means of Living.” It opens this Friday (First Friday) at the Terrain Gallery (628 N Monroe) at 5 pm and continues for the rest of the month.

With so much destruction in our region and with so many people facing loss, talking with her was a welcome interlude. I find her work moving and interesting. I was very keen to hear her process and how she came to formulate and execute these beautiful paper creations that are both complex and fragile. Yet, to me, they radiate a simple inner strength. Today's Out and About - Artist Jennifer Seo

 

It seems strange to carry on with any kind of regular routine while our region experiences so much heartache and loss. My hope is that today’s show might help take our minds off what has unfolded here, if only for an hour. Today on Out and About, I will be talking with Jennifer Seo whose show "Bab Geuleus: 1. Rice Bowl 2. Means of Living" is opening at Terrain Gallery this Friday.

Art is a creative act, and we have been subject to so much damage to our nation over the past couple years, perhaps none more tangible than the destruction this weekend in Spokane.

I hope to have some resources  for you to help those who have lost so much in these fires, as well. 

Also, a reminder to turn your ballots in today. Voting is still something we can do (for now) to stem the tide of hate and destruction in our nation.  Please exercise this right before it is too late.
