Today on Out and About - Spokane Arts Program Director Jeremy Whittington

Today on Out and About, I will be talking with my friend and “compagnon dans les arts” Jeremy Whittington. Jeremy is the Program Director for Spokane Arts. Spokane Arts has been in the local news lately. There is always a political component to making art - in the messaging, in the funding and in the performance/display of created works. How has the mission of Spokane Arts evolved during this national constitutional crisis? This is a topic that has really been on my mind lately.

The United States has a long history of combating fascism with art. Human expression through created artistic works and performances always seems to be the undervalued tool that brings down oppressive regimes, often in the most lovely of fashions.

Jeremy is one of the smartest, talented, kindest, hard-working people I know, and I am really looking forward to hanging out with this wonderful human being. I think you would really get a boost to your afternoon if you did the same!

Five days left!

The bidding for my big-ole painting “Majestic Marmot Monologue” will conclude this Friday at 8 pm. Please see everyone’s lovely Brush on the Bluff artwork at this month’s First Friday show at the Spokane Art School Gallery, 503 E 2nd Ave.

Doors open at 5 and close at 8. There is plenty of free parking there too. I will be hanging out in the gallery, if you have any questions. I will not be bringing the models. They are forest creatures and have previous engagements.
If you would like to bid on the painting, here is the link - https://givebutter.com/.../brushont.../auction/items/1026131
If you want to check out all the artwork, here is that link -

Work in the studio

It may sound pretentious to call my basement corner room a "studio."

Words create reality though. In my masters degree studies, so long ago, I was tasked with seeing the concept of transubstantiation as a philosophical notion. So, I will call this dinky space a "studio" because that is "what it does."

Lately though, I've been noticing that the studio has aspects of a "three-ring circus." I continually move from project to project, while I feel like, even in my absence, the creation of that project continues.

Stuck on some point in writing a story? Maybe paint a little to nudge the synapses. Paint needs to dry? This papier mache mask needs a little help with the nose. Back to writing. Oh there is that video to edit, and the sound files...

All I need is some circus peanuts between acts. Here's something you may not know about circus peanuts and Lucky Charms.
