Yesterday's Out and About. The 2026 Spokane Pride Festival has begun!

Yesterday, I talked with Spokane Pride Executive Director Matt Danielson. We talked about North Idaho's very successful Pride Festival that took place last week. The Pride Festival is already underway, here in Spokane. Tonight at 7 pm, there is an interfaith worship service at St. John’s Cathedral.

Friday is when a lot of stuff starts happening. If you come to Riverfront Park for the Trans Rights Rally on Friday at the Red Wagon (I will be one of the speakers) you can stick around for Yoga in the Park (thank you to COIL) and then the fun really accelerates with shows, music and dancing. Saturday, of course, is the big day with the vendor and food fair starting at 11. The parade at noon (Robert Sevilla and I will once again be playing music, announcing and broadcasting the parade for KYRS), activities all through the day, including a Two-Spirit Powwow, beer garden, food, vendors, shows and performances (on six different stages) in Riverfront Park. After the day’s festivities, you can head over to Nyne for a street fair and dance.

The Pride Festival is family-friendly and open to everyone. If you are already missing Pig Out in the Park, Neighbor Days or any of the other Spokane community celebrations, come on down for some fun. Hang out with a bunch of other kind, and honorable folks.

With our nation being plunged into fascism and the reluctance of legacy media to acknowledge the state we are in, it can be crazy-making. It can cause anxiety and loss of hope. That is exactly what the regime/cult wants you to feel. The Pride Festival is an antidote for that.

Having fun with thousands of other people who value community, kindness, honor, truth and intelligence will make you feel good - no matter who you are - straight, gay, cis or trans. Maybe this is why so many mainline churches, temples and synagogues have participated in Pride each year.

If you missed yesterday’s Out and About, you can take a listen here https://archive.kyrs.org/mp3/kyrs_260609_160000b.mp3

Today's Out and About - PRIDE FESTIVAL IS THIS WEEKEND! HAPPY PRIDE!

On today’s show, we will be checking in again with Matt Danielson. Matt’s the director of Spokane Pride.

This weekend is the Pride Festival in Spokane. It’s an event that brings tens of thousands of kind and decent people to Downtown Spokane and Riverfront Park. It’s fun. It’s free. Just being there with a multitude of honorable people will make you feel good, whether you are LGBTQ or not. It is family-friendly and a powerful respite from the continual onslaught of Fascism, lies and violence spewing from the immoral crime family and cult running our nation right now.

This year, KYRS will once again be broadcasting from the start of the parade. We (Creative Mindset’s Robert Sevilla and I) will be playing happy music and announcing the participants as they walk, skate, skip, gallop, ride, swim or drive by. The parade starts at noon and the rest of the day is filled with fun programing. The weather is supposed to be really nice. If you can’t be there, you can listen to the parade on KYRS starting at noon and hear the fun.

The event kicks off at 3 pm in Riverfront Park on Friday with a rally for trans rights. Matt and I will be giving you the lowdown on all the activities that will be taking place this weekend.

I will also be telling you (as usual) when and where all the pro-democracy demonstrations will be taking place this week.

Thank you to my underwriters - Boots Bakery and Eastern Washington University.

Out and About airs every Tuesday at 4 pm on KYRS at 88.1 and 92.3 fm. Also streaming at KYRS.org. Thanks for listening! Maeve

Yesterday's Out and About - HAND TO GOD...

Yesterday, on Out and About, I had a fun conversation with Troy Nickerson and Chris Jensen about their play Hand to God. Troy is the director of the show and Chris produced it. This Theater on the Verge production was an incredible thing to witness and was like nothing I had ever seen before. The story, the acting, the puppets, the set - everything was superb. How did they make something this complex, this weird, this moving and this funny?

I was plagued by a failing voice yesterday, and as I type this my voice is completely gone! I have to say I probably haven’t laughed this hard during an interview. If you haven’t seen the play, get your tickets here -  https://theaterontheverge.ticketspice.com/hand-to-god

Today's Out and About - Theater on the Verge's performance of HAND TO GOD...

I really enjoyed Theater on the Verge’s production of Hand to God, last weekend. The performance was like nothing I had ever witnessed. If you have a chance to see this play, it is very much worth your time and money.

When love, grief and longing get tangled up in a church’s puppet ministry, you know the story is going to be good. Mix in a little possible hand-puppet-demonic-possession? For me? Ambrosia!

This play left me with a lot of questions, though. The performances were so wonderful and the puppets (one in particular) had such believable personalities, I couldn’t help but ask myself - How did they do that? If you’ve seen the play, you will want to tune in. If you haven’t seen the play, tune in and then be prepared to get your tickets here -  https://theaterontheverge.ticketspice.com/hand-to-god

Yesterday's Out and About - Spokane Pride Executive Director Matt Danielson

Yesterday, I talked with Spokane Pride Executive Director Matt Danielson. The Pride Festival is coming up! It’s now a two day celebration. There are plenty of events on Friday, June 12 and the usual big events on Saturday, June 13 which have attracted tens of thousands of people to downtown Spokane every year.

Matt and I spent some time talking about why the Pride Festival is for everyone. It’s a celebration of community for all kind and honorable people. It’s family-friendly too.

Today's Out and About - Spokane Pride's Executive Director - Matt Danielson

It is almost time for Spokane’s family-friendly Pride Festival. On today’s Out and About, I will be talking with Matt Danielson - Spokane Pride’s executive director. Matt, with the help of so many others, organizes a Pride weekend that attracts tens of thousands of kind and honorable people to Spokane every year.

Whether you are straight or gay, trans or cis, if you are an honorable person, you will find thousands of kindred spirits at the festival. With a regime intent on destroying decency, truth and honor in our nation, this is a great opportunity for all good people to come together and have fun.

I will also be telling you (as usual) when and where all the pro-democracy demonstrations will be taking place this week.

Turkey Vulture of Love charity auction bidding is at $100

Alrighty! Here it is the final of my painting “Turkey Vulture Love.” And it is tricked out in a nice frame too.

The bidding is at $100, as I write this. Tomorrow, there is an opening reception at the Spokane Art School Gallery - 503 E 2nd Ave., Suite B. It’s from 4 pm to 8 pm. There are a lot of great artists featured, and you will recognize their work.

I am donating whatever the painting sells for to the Spokane Art School. They are really nice people. Learning to make art, right now, is very important. In order to fight the destroyers, we need to be exercising our humanity by creating. I am happy to help in that endeavor.

You can bid on my painting here - https://givebutter.com/c/forest-to-frame-2026/auction/items/1907486

Thanks! Maeve

Yesterday's Out and About - a conversation with multi-faceted artist Liv Hebert Watkins

Yesterday, I talked with Liv Hebert Watkins. Liv is an artist who currently has an installation, The Table Is Set, at the Terrain Gallery until May 30 - Thursday through Saturday, 4-7 pm. Terrain Gallery is located at 628 N Monroe. I really enjoyed hearing about how she has evolved as an artist. Liv works in many mediums and I learned a lot about what it takes to get your art out there. The installation at Terrain has been getting a lot of press and critical acclaim.

Art has become a powerful tool, a rejuvenating oasis and a map forward during these turbulent times. The kindness of creativity and the active empathy that art invokes is smack dab in the middle of what it means to be human. It is resistance to the dehumanizing and disgusting lies, cruelty, stupidity, dishonor and evil that oligarchs, anti-Christ “Christian Nationalists,” Republicans, tech bros, and other miscreants have been secreting all over our nation. We need art now more than ever.

Turkey Vulture of Love bidding has started!!!!

Here is my painting, so far, for the Forest to Frame benefit for Spokane Art School.  I would say I am probably a little over 2/3 done. It is a 16 x 20 acrylic painting on sealed and gesso’d hardboard. It’s called Turkey Vulture of Love and it comes with an original poem about, well, the turkey vulture of love. You can bid on it here https://givebutter.com/c/forest-to-frame-2026/auction/items/1907486/bid.

What have I been listening to, while I paint? I’m glad you asked. I have been listening to cassette tapes - the Blue Velvet Soundtrack, Marty Robbins, Mojo Nixon, The Cars, The Clash, Devo, etc. Some real “get in the head of the turkey vulture” tunes.

If you want to read the poem, here it is. I collaborated with Nick the Beet in writing it and he is taking the credit for the words (it’s in our contract).

Turkey Vulture of Love

To try and mend a broken heart

Went I to the Forest of Finch

Begging nature to do her part

When a  flicker made me flinch

Laying alone was I - supine

A rose petal rode the sky

Not from a branch of oak or pine

Released from heaven on high

Soaring smooth circles overhead

Dark form against gray so murky

Found myself surprised - not dead

T’was a vulture best known as turkey

In its strong beak he clasped a rose

Guess that’s from where the petal fell

The message seemed too on the nose

A tale he tried too hard to sell

Still his soaring  made me think of

Words, deeds I should have said and done

Callousness that lost me my love

Teardrops fell with the setting sun

My sadness seemed to catch his eye

His holding pattern he did flee

He quit his current loop quite shy

And he landed right next to me

His presence gave me quite a start

The rose in his maw brushed my head

I tried to still my beating heart

And in my ear he clearly said

“I carry a rose in my beak

It has nothing to do with you

It’s for my mate that I do seek

She’s just broken out of the zoo

This flower’s hers to show my love

Sorry, I must not tarry on

I stopped to circle you above

Thinking you might be some carrion”

With that he rose off on his way

Giant wings with chicken’s feet

Which way he flew, I couldn’t say

As I moved quickly to my seat

What I learned that day on forest lawn

Turkey vulture, and me a winner

Grateful for my life, still I’ll be gone

When he brings his date for dinner

Nick the Beet
